The Laboratory of Materials Science and Processes (MatProLab) provides both the educational laboratory support for Chemical and Physics courses to undergraduate students of the Technical University of Crete, as well as the research support for post-graduate students and PhD candidates.

The lab has developed intense research activity, both at basic and applied levels, involving, among others:

  • Materials Science and Engineering
  • Electro-Catalytic Materials for energy and environmental applications
  • Heterogeneous Catalysis and Surface Science
  • Chemical Engineering Processes
  • Advanced synthesis and modification routes at nanoscale
  • Novel thin films deposition techniques
  • Surface and Spectroscopic analysis

Synthesis, characterization and evaluation of novel electro-catalyst formulations for energy or environmental applications.

Indicative topics:

  • Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU); CO2 hydrogenation to value-added products
  • Catalytic abatement of hazardous pollutants (NOx, N2O, VOCs, HCs, CO)
  • Natural gas/Biomass upgrade
  • H2 production and use
  • Fuel cells (direct solid-liquid-gaseous fuel cells)
  • Electro-catalytic process; alkaline electrolysis; HER and OER processes; supercapacitors; batteries, detectors
  • Electrochemical synthesis of value added chemicals & fuels
  • Physical vapor deposition (PVD)
  • Electrodeposition and surface modification of materials
  • Laser-induced surface deposition and modification
